Word Study Homework

Your child received the word list that best suits his/her needs. Please have your child complete 5 activities throughout the next two weeks for homework. The activities are below:

Activity 1: Initial Word Sort

  1. Color each of the pattern headings a different color (including the oddball).

  2. Highlight all vowels in each of the words so it is easier to identify the vowel pattern.

  3. Sort the words into the categories by moving the word cards under the appropriate headings. Remember to say the words out loud as you sort.

Activity 2: Written Closed Sort (Return to school)

  1. Sort your words with the word tiles.

  2. Write each of the headings in the gray boxes at the top of the table on your paper.

  3. Write the words under the correct header.

Activity 3: Blind Sort

  1. Give your headings to someone else or hide them from yourself (no peeking)!

  2. Lay down a word from each category as a header

  3. Sort the rest of your words into the correct columns.  Then add the headings AFTER you’ve sorted the words.

    Activity 4: Word Hunt

  1. Choose a book or magazine to use for the word hunt.

  2. Look for words in the book or magazine that have the same patterns as the words in your list (do not write the actual words on your list, look for different words that follow the same patterns).

  3. Record the words on a piece of paper.

Activity 5: Word Study Choice Board (Return to school after each box is completed; it will be returned)

  1. Choose one of the activities form your Word Study Choice Board.  When you’ve completed the activity, have your parent initial the box and bring the choice board back to school.
