Homework

In 5th grade students will continue to use an assignment book/student planner to help themselves remain organized with our assignments.  Our assignment book will continue to list the night's assignment/s as well as long term assignments and other information for families. Please encourage your child's use of their assignment book by reviewing it with your child and signing it on a nightly basis.

Homework is designed to take about 50 minutes. Assignments sent home will either build on a topic from class or be a review in which students are asked to apply their learning. Typically students will have language and mathematics assignment each night.  Students may also have assignments in Social Studies or Science.  These may vary from nightly assignments to one of a longer term.

In language arts, the spelling and vocabulary study guides be sent home upon beginning a unit of study and tested in about a week.  Test dates will be noted in your child's assignment book.  Please help your child to practice indepedently spelling their weekly words.  In relation to vocabulary words, your should be able to provide a working definition as well as be able to apply the definitions of the vocabulary to given examples and situations.

Lastly, if your child does not have a formal homework assignment please encourage him or her to complete our ongoing informal assignment of reading for 20-30 minutes or practicing basic math facts for 10 minutes.

Please remember the purpose of homework is to build upon or reinforce previously instructed material. Please let me know if your child is taking an excessively long period of time to complete his or her work or if they are having difficulty understanding a concept.  Please do not wait until the day before or the day of a test to ask for help.  I am always here; please encourage your child to seek and ask for help when they need it.
