I am Karen Gennaro! I am thrilled to be able to teach your children in Full Day Kindergarten this year! There are two full day kindergartens in the East Penn School District. One is here at Lincoln Elementary in Emmaus, and the other is at the Alburtis School in Alburtis.
Before I began teaching kindergarten at Lincoln, I taught in a developmental pre-school for special education on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona and at Head Start of the Lehigh Valley. I was also a kindergarten teacher at Kings Highway, and Wescosville schools, as well as a first grade teacher at Lincoln and Macungie schools. Recently, I served as an adjunct professor in the Early Childhood Education Department at Northampton Community College. I taught classes in Language Development and Literacy as well as the Arts. However, I especially love working with kindergarteners because they tend to be curious, eager to learn and willing to try new things. I will work hard to keep your young students interested and inquisitive throughout the school year!
Our classroom will be brimming with books, allowing for the incorporation of literature and poetry as well as facts and folk tales, language activities, phonics and alphabetics into the daily routine. Students will explore math through a coherent curriculum, that is compatible with sequences of important mathematical ideas. Time will be provided for the children to delve deeply and sustain their interactions with key mathematical ideas. I will use methods that will strengthen children’s problem-solving and reasoning processes, and enhance children’s natural interest in mathematics. There will be science experiences and experiments, integrated art and music (in addition to regular specialists), as well as many multi-sensory opportunities.
The Lincoln School Full Day Kindergarten program has roots in Constructivist Philosophy. Opportunities for inquiry and discovery are embedded in playful daily activities, experiences, and projects. Lincoln Full Day Kindergarten incorporates research based paradigms for instruction, and employs a prepared environment, in addition to teacher guided lessons designed to ensure that instruction is differentiated to meet the needs of each child.
I will explain my methods, share the EPSD kindergarten curriculum, and answer your questions about full day kindergarten in further detail at Meet the Teacher Night on September 14, 2016 from 6:00-7:30 PM. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend.
Parents are encouraged to become involved in the program, and have the opportunity to participate as classroom volunteers. Each fall there is a workshop designed to introduce parents to our unique exploratory environment. After the workshop, classroom time for mothers and/or fathers interested in volunteering is scheduled. However, parents interested in volunteering will need to obtain the necessary clearances/certifications through the State.
Please consider becoming part of the volunteer team! This is an open door classroom so whether you work outside the home or inside the home, if you find yourself with a free day, come and visit us...even if you cannot commit to volunteering on a regular basis! Please let me know you want to visit a day or so in advance and we can arrange a time.
I am looking forward to a rewarding and successful school year. Please do not hesitate to contact me at school, or write a note and send it with your child, if you have a question or concern. The phone number at Lincoln is (610) 965-1636 Extension 7103, my e-mail address is firstname.lastname@example.org.
