Responsibility, Responsiblilty, Responsibilty!
What is responsibility?
Responsibility is being accountable in word and deed. Having a sense of duty to fulfill tasks with reliability, dependability and commitment. A responsible person is accountable for her/his behavior and follows through on commitments.
Third grade is a year of growing independence. Parents can help foster this growth by encouraging students to unpack and repack their book bag and folders. Help your child establish a routine of laying out their "Homework Folder" and "Return to School Folder", and emptying their "Keep at Home Folder", and giving you work to sign or school notices to read each day after school.
Once homework is completed, assignment book signed, and notices/signed work taken care of, encourage your child to repack his/her folders and book bag. Oral reminders and repetition of routine will help your child gain independence this year.
Often, when a child does not have completed homework assignments with them in school, or has left a text book at home, it seems to be because "Mom or Dad didn't pack it." Help your child understand it is their responsibiltiy to be prepared for school, rather than yours.
