Q&A with Mrs. Hunter

Where did you go to school?

I'm a graduate of Emmaus High School as is my husband.  We were in Advanced Placement United States History together our senior year and have been married twenty-three years.  Ironically, two classes I teach, I also had as a student, American Studies II Honors and AP US History.

Albright College is where I earned my B.A. in History as well as my secondary education certification in social studies.  Five years later I earned my M.A. in History from East Stroudsburg University while teaching in the Poconos.  I wrote my thesis on The Salem Witchcraft Trials.

How long have you been teaching?

This is my twenty-fourth year of teaching.  I taught seventh grade world cultures and history for seven years in the Stroudsburg School District before coming to Emmaus High School in 2003.

For how many years have you taught AP or Honors?

I have taught Honors or AP and/or both for over twenty-four years.

What school activities have you been involved in and what are you currently doing?

I have served as a yearbook advisor, newspaper advisor, softball coach, peer mediation advisior, and  as a cooperating teacher for student teachers for several colleges.  I've also been a member of Report Cards Committee, Use of Time Committtee, Accreditation for Growth, and Curriculum Committee.  Additionally, I was trained for the Student Assistance Program Team in 1997 and was on the high school SAP team for twelve years until the 2016-2017 school year due to scheduling.  In 2018 I became a Gifted Support Teacher, which was an easy transition since I have worked with Gifted students and their parents my entire teaching career.

Have you received any awards?

Yes, several.  Mentor Recognition Award (from a football player, cheerleader, or band member) 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, and 2006;  Orchestra Mentor Award from two seniors May, 2013; Who's Who Among America's Teachers 2002 and 2005; and the Brass Apple Award 2000-2001 for perfect attendance

Do you have any children?

We have two boys.  Our older son is a senior here and our younger son is in sixth grade at Eyer.  We also have "fur children."  Our black Labrador Retriever puppy, Meghan, is great friends with our cats, Beaker and Bailey.  We've had as many as four cats and two dogs at once, but sadly our numbers have declined in recent years.

Where do you live?

My family lives in the East Penn School District as do my parents-in-law

What are your hobbies?

I love tennis, swimming, biking, and kayaking.  I played varsity tennis for Emmaus and Albright.  Photography is a huge passion of mine.  My husband calls me the "pararazzi" with our children.  We had to add an external drive just for my pictures.  Also, my family likes attending Iron Pigs and Phillies games.

Additionally, I am on the Shelter House Board of Directors.  My family and I are passionate about volunteering for the Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue.  You may see us at the PAWS Across PA event, Santa Paws, BLRR basket bingo, or at the Emmaus Farmers' Market.

Do you travel?

Yes, that's something my family and I greatly enjoy.  This summer we went back to Sint Maarten and took a cruise to Bermuda.   In recent summers we traveled to New Orleans, Sint Maartenn, England and Scotland for two and a half weeks.  We put 2,000 miles on our rental car and took the ferry to Orkney Island, exploring Skara Brae, the most well preserved Neolithic northern European site.   I've been to Europe five times as well as the Caribbean, Mexico, and Bermuda numerous times too.  We love going to historical places too like Monroe's Highland, Monticello, Mount Vernon, Montpelier, FDR's "Little White House" in Warm Springs Georgia, Martin Luther Kings Birthplace, Joshua Chamberlain Museum, and the Women's Rights National Historical Park.  Traveling to domestic and foreign destinations really enriches my classes.
